Virginia

Upstairs in the Past meets several of the Standards of Learning for the sixth and seventh grades in Virginia. Among them are:

    English/Writing

  • Sixth Grade
  • E/W.6.1 Analyze oral participation in small group activities
  • E/W.6.2 Analyze the effectiveness of participant interactions
  • E/W.6.7 Write narratives, descriptions and explanations
  • E/W.6.8 Use writing as a tool for learning in all subjects
  • Seventh Grade
  • E/W.7.1 The student will give and seek information in conversations and in group discussions.
  • E/W.7.2 The student will identify the relationship between a speaker's verbal and nonverbal messages.
  • E/W.7.3 The student will identify persuasive messages in non-print media, including television, radio, and films.
  • E/W.7.5 The student will read a variety of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
  • E/W.7.6 The student will read and understand information from varied sources.
  • E/W.7.8 The student will develop narrative, expository, persuasive, and technical writings.
  • E/W.7.9 The student will use a word processor to plan, draft, revise, and publish some writings.
  • Computer/Technology

  • C/T.GR8.1 The student will communicate through application software.
  • C/T.GR8.2 The student will communicate through networks and telecommunication.
  • C/T.GR8.3 The student will understand computer processing, storing, retrieval and transmission technologies and appreciate the relevant advantages and disadvantages of various processing, storage, retrieval and transmission technologies.
  • C/T.GR8.4 The student will process, store, retrieve, and transmit electronic information.

Mathematics

  • MAT.7.1 The student will compare, order, and determine equivalent relationships between fractions, decimals, and percents, including scientific notation.
  • MAT.7.5 The student will solve consumer application problems involving tips, discounts, sales tax, and simple interest, using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents.
  • The course also provides some background information for United States History: 1877 to the Present
