Stories Past is produced by a company based in Virginia, USA. The company aims to provide interactive web-based educational content. Our focus is on communicating the educational message of the organization and we will use whatever tools are appropriate for the project: JavaScript, html, ASP, database technology and Flash are all in our suite of tools. We can be reached at:
The owners of the company are: Mark Freeman trained as a teacher in England and taught in the 1980s in England and the Caribbean. Since then he has worked in the software industry, most recently for a company specializing in Collections management software for museums, archives and archaeology. Barbara Heath has a MA and PhD in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania. She is active as an archaeologist in the museum field. As well as publishing extensively within her field, she has worked with K-12 educators for several years in developing history and archaeology-based content for classroom use. Upstairs in the Past is a web-based educational module designed for schools and as a way of showcasing some of our skills. It is a cross-disciplinary, interactive web site designed to increase language, social studies, mathematics, science and computer/technology skills for middle school students. Access to the site is through subscription. Click here to login or register or contact us at edu@storiespast.com for further information. You can also get more information here. Upstairs in the Past, is set in a fictional house in the past. The site allows students to explore the family's living quarters by navigating an interactive floor plan. In each room, students gather virtual items--toys, photographs, letters, diaries, household accounts and other materials--related to the residents of the house. Each item has a page with related links, discussion questions, and activities that come together to help solve four broad interrelated problems: What's the Year? Where are You? Who's Home? and What's Happening? A final problem, Tell the Story, invites them to summarize their findings through articles, cartoons, editorials, or other contributions in an online issue of the virtual (and fictitious) local newspaper.
